Omar Soliman secured the acquittal of a Defendant indicted for intentional strangulation, two counts of assault by beating and criminal damage.
The case concerned allegations that the Defendant had strangled and assaulted the Complainant at her address, having allegedly attended uninvited, forced his way into the property and entered her bedroom.
During the course of the proceedings, the Complainant provided multiple further statements, in which she accepted that she and the Defendant had been engaged in an ongoing sexual relationship, that they had arranged for him to attend her address and that she had willingly allowed him into her bedroom.
Omar’s defence focused on the significant inconsistencies within the Complainant’s accounts, successfully undermining her credibility and, consequently, the reliability of the Crown’s case as a whole. The trial involved careful and sensitive cross-examination of the Complainant.
After less than two hours of deliberation, the jury returned unanimous Not Guilty verdicts on all four counts, resulting in the Defendant’s complete acquittal.
