On 21 September 2026, Don Ramble, First Junior Counsel to the Undercover Policing Inquiry, questioned HN60, a former Special Branch Special Demonstration Squad undercover officer who infiltrated left-wing and animal rights campaign groups.
The officer, who operated under the cover name ‘Dave Evans’, had originally provided evidence that he did not enter into any relationships while using his false identity. Under questioning by Don, he accepted that he had in fact been in a relationship with a woman for at least six months. He also accepted that it was “possible” the relationship could have continued for as long as two years, although he could not recall its precise duration.
The evidence was reported in The Guardian, and an audio recording of the hearing is available here.
The Undercover Policing Inquiry was established to examine undercover policing in England and Wales since 1968 and to make recommendations for the future.
Don Ramble's practice has involved prosecuting serious and organised crime and substantial fraud. He regularly prosecutes lengthy, complex, multi-defendant cases for the South East Complex Casework Unit and has also established himself as an expert on disclosure issues.
