Ben Keith, a barrister specialising in extradition, said: “She is going to have to give them something really concrete, not just ‘He was at this party then’. It is whether he did anything with the women, and whether the women were under age. My suspicion is that the evidence is not as strong as they make out. Unless she has got a room full of recordings, I am not sure she will have enough evidence.”

American prosecutors liked prominent cases, he said, as many went on to political careers. “I wonder whether having a British royal scalp would keep the case as high-profile as it can be.”
