Nathan Toms was instructed to represent the lead defendant in a 30-count three-week trial at Isleworth Crown Court
It was alleged that the Defendant was the leader of an organised crime group that targeted men on the Grindr dating application. The group would gain entry to properties under the pretence of a romantic encounter, but whilst inside the property, would steal phones from the victims. These phones would later be used to carry out significant fraud on the linked bank accounts.
The Defendant was unanimously acquitted on 10 of the 30 counts. The trial involved careful exploration of the voluminous cell-site evidence and challenges to 9 positive identifications.
A favourable sentence of five years was secured following conviction. Nathan’s legal submissions on why the offending was not a ‘hate crime’ were later adopted verbatim by the learned judge in sentencing remarks.
Nathan was instructed by Mr Mohammed Ullah of ULA Solicitors.
The case has been widely reported in BBC News, Sky News, and the Daily Mail.
