On 16 November 2019, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner opened its doors to 235 aspiring lawyers for the 4th Annual Urban Lawyers Careers Conference ‘Designing your Future’.
Urban Lawyers is a charity that aims to inspire, provide guidance, advice and to share the experiences and knowledge from industry experts and leaders. The charity targets people from non-traditional backgrounds and is passionate about improving social mobility and diversity in the legal profession.
Alexandra Wilson, a Criminal and Family law barrister, was part of a panel selected to speak about ‘Building a Brand in the Digital Age’.
Alexandra, also known as @EssexBarrister on social media, spoke about growing her social media profile by being authentic and enthusiastic on social media. She described how her tweet about her non-traditional background and route to the Bar went viral and encouraged others to think about what stands them apart.
The panel members each described their own experiences of social media and gave valuable advice to the audience. The audience were encouraged to pursue what they are passionate about in an age where people lose interest quickly and are always ready to move onto the next new thing. The panel was made up of barristers and solicitors across a broad range of the legal profession, from corporate to criminal law.
The students and aspiring barristers were also told to think about using a wide range of social media in the digital age. Whilst sites such as LinkedIn have traditionally been used for marketing young professionals, conference attendees were encouraged to be innovative and to use other popular platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
The conference was a huge success, enabling students to network with legal professionals as well as allowing them to discuss the challenges and opportunities for young lawyers!
