After a trial that lasted over 3 months in front of HHJ Joy at Maidstone Crown Court and which attracted the interest of the national press, a jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts against all 3 defendants indicted on this fraud conspiracy.  Horse dealers Aniela Jurecka and Charlotte Johnson had, over a number of years, bought horses substandard in either health or temperament, exaggerated their abilities in adverts in the equestrian press, and then drugged them when prospective customers attended to try the horses out.  They were assisted by Deal veterinary surgeon David Smith, who would supply them with drugs off the books and whom Jurecka and Johnson would recommend to their customers as a source of objective professional opinion for a pre-purchase examination.
