Advocacy workshop for solicitors a resounding success
On 16th April 2008, Chambers hosted an advocacy workshop attended by a number of solicitors.
Chaired by John Warrington, the focus of the workshop was on the sorts of pleas, applications and submissions that commonly occur in the criminal courts.
Participants were given a set of case papers to prepare in advance of the workshop in the theoretical case of R. v. Peter Xavier, a habitual shoplifter who had one again been arrested on suspicion of theft. On the day, participants performed a bail application, a contested committal and a plea in mitigation with Claire Cooper, Wendy Hewitt, Mark Cotter and John Keal acting as formidable judges.
The workshop was a resounding success with participants enthusiastically requesting that Chambers put on a second workshop involving a mock trial. As well as being an excellent introduction to typical advocacy, the workshop was also thoroughly enjoyable and an opportunity for our professional clients to get to know Chambers a little better.
At its conclusion, participants were required to rate the workshop in a number of categories and it scored “excellent” and “good” ratings throughout, “excellent” being the most common score.
Any solicitors who are interested in refining their advocacy skills and free CPD points can contact John Warrington who will be delighted to arrange a similar exercise in the future.
