Recruitment Policy

Chambers is an equal opportunities employer and strives to prevent discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, ethnic or national origin, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, age, religion or political persuasion. This applies equally to the recruitment.

The majority of Barrister recruitment is handled by means of a direct approach between a Member of Chambers and a potential Member of Chambers. These approaches are followed through by the tenancy committee in accordance with the procedure set out in Appendix 3 of the Chambers Constitution.

These procedures do not apply to applications from pupils, which are dealt with according to the procedure in the pupillage policy. This recruitment policy only comes into play when Chambers decides to advertise publicly one or more vacancies for established practitioners.

The need for recruitment is to be reviewed annually at a Chambers meeting and any decision to recruit taken in accordance with the aims and objectives set out in the Chambers business plan and policy statement. In addition the question of recruitment may be considered from time to time by the Management Committee and a decision taken to advertise.

The Management Committee will specify the practice area, experience and any other specifications to be contained in advertisements.

The procedure will thereafter be managed by the Tenancy Committee.

Adverts will be placed in suitable media, requesting confidential approaches to a named individual. With supporting CV and any other information which may assist assessment of the application.

After the closing date, nominated members of the Tenancy Committee will review the applications and produce a shortlist based upon criteria agreed by the Tenancy Committee to follow the aims and objectives set out in the business plan.

Those shortlisted will be invited to chambers for interview and at the same time requested to complete an Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form.

The Tenancy Committee will agree a suitable interview process and panel and the panel will be used to ensure a standard approach.

The Committee will make a decision and recommend an offer of one or more tenancies in line with the previous direction of the Management Committee. If no suitable candidates are identified the Management Committee will be advised accordingly.

The recommendations of the Tenancy Committee will be referred to Chambers in the manner set out at Appendix 3 of the Chambers Constitution
